First off, we must all wish my sweet Mama a HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!
I seriously have the best Mom in the entire world and as I approach the big 3-0 I notice every day how much I am *actually* turning into her.
I wish I could be there to celebrate with you, Mama (and by celebrate I mean eat cake with you for three meals + snacks alllll dayyyy lonngggg) but you'll just have to have a great day without me.
I LOVE YOU!
Now. Let us discuss this Fit Bit.
I.
AM.
OBSESSED.
If you don't know what a FitBit is... It is basically a pedometer on crack. You wear it on your bra (if you're a lady that wears a bra) and it tracks all of your steps, how many stairs you take (due to an altimeter or something I can't pronouce), how many calories you burn throughout the day and your sleep patterns. You can sync automatically with iPhone 5 & 4s to get real-time updates throughout the day. Unfortunately, I only have an iPhone 4 so I have to sync to my computer every night and have to resort to looking down my shirt to get status updates throughout the day.
What?
You gotta do what you gotta do, okay!?
Also, you can link it to My Fitness Pal to track your food (and it will adjust how many calories you can eat based on the activity you record.) You have a flower that grows as you get close to your activity goal for the day. The website sets you goals based on your weight and if you want to gain/lose/maintain your weight.
You can see an example below of two days worth of activity. On Sunday I exceeded all of my targets but on Tuesday I STILL did NOT hit my calories burned goal despite running 5k on the treadmill after work.
The sleep tracker is also really cool and it tells you how often you've awakened throughout the night. You can also see a nifty pie chart how many calories you've eaten.
(Please note. In order for the calories to be accurate you can't lie to My Fitness Pal!)
(Not that, ahem, I've ever "forgotten" to put in a couple of spoonfuls of nutella eaten standing by the sink before bed, or anything...)
So what have I noticed so far?
I have started taking the stairs all of the time now.
I have started taking an earlier train so I can take the long, pretty walk to work.
I have become obsessed with having my flower grow and may or may not have jogged in place for 20 minutes while cooking dinner last week in order to hit my calories burned goal and have a full sized flower.
I have gone back to tracking everything really accurately again.
AND
I've lost two pounds this week.
So, basically what I'm saying is everyone needs a Fit Bit.
I mean... how better than to motivate yourself that competing against yourself?!
This might be my go-to gift for Christmas for everyone this year.
(Mama, watch out! Fit Bit might just be coming your way!)
EVERYBODY WISH MAMA A HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

This is awesome! Where do you clip it at night? I don't wear a bra to bed...Congrats on the 2lbs lost! You are an inspiration!
ReplyDeleteI loved your review of the Fit Bit... I've heard a lot about the Up by Jawbone tracking bracelet from College Prepster lately, and I'm now convinced I NEED one. I also just heard that Fit Bit is making a bracelet too that's coming out this spring!! It sounds like a GREAT concept. I'm studying abroad right now but a fitness tracking bracelet is the first thing on my post-study abroad wishlist. (Yes... it exists....)
ReplyDeleteP.S. Happy Birthday Momma Beantown Prepster!!
You look great and I can really tell just how much more you've lost since your wedding by looking at that picture!
ReplyDeleteHappy birthday to your mama! And congrats on your fitness persistence:).
ReplyDeleteHAPPY BIRTHDAY Mama Beantown!
ReplyDeleteHAPPY BIRTHDAY MAMA!!!
ReplyDeleteThis is amazing. NOW I NEED ONE. Which one did you get?
ReplyDeleteJust ordered mine (while eating a Cadbury Creme Egg -- the shame)! This is reason 1,000,000 why I love your blog . . . you're helping me be more fit. Yay!
ReplyDeleteOh, and happy birthday to your mom!
Holy crap you blow me out of the water! 20k steps a day. I'm tired just thinking about it.
ReplyDeletep.s. Happy Birthday to your mama!
happy birthday to your mama! woo :)
ReplyDeleteI want a fit bit so badly! Am considering asking for one for my upcoming birthday.
ReplyDeleteNot Fitbit related but I found your blog through a link on betsy's blog and I love it! I'm thinking of heading to the UK in the next few years and you've got a lot of great information on here!
ReplyDeleteHmm...Curious if it works the same way as the Jawbone | Up which wasn't accurate for me. It counted all movements - typing, knitting, conducting my band/choir...
ReplyDeleteThe company said it worked by counting motions that could be walking...
Have you found anything similar with the FitBit? {generating impossible steps while sitting?}
