Bubbledogs: My version of HEAVEN!

For an early Valentine's Day treat we decided to trek into London to try out this new restaurant I'd heard about for months. Bubbledogs has been blowing up in the food blogger world and it's been on my list since it opened.

Clearly we weren't going to go into the city ONLY for one meal, so we decided to check out the Portabello Road market.

Two words:

TOURIST.

CENTRAL.

But I loved it. I mean... I purchased this pretty amazing hat, so the crowds were clearly worth braving.

Also... we stumbled upon the Electric Cinema, and after reading about the secret donut shop inside on Lovely Jubbly London's blog, I dragged poor PB in for a treat.

(BEST. DONUTS. IN. LONDON.)
(We'll save these babies for a different post... Trust me. They deserve it.)

After walking around for hours and hours, we decided to head over to Charlotte Street to hop in line at Bubbledogs.  They don't take reservations, so it is first come first serve.

We thought we were being super clever by getting there at 3:00PM. I mean, who eats at 3PM?

Apparently a lot of people.

We ended up waiting in line for about 40 minutes, before being seated at a 4-top table next to the. LOUDEST. MOST CRASS. NEW YORKER. EVER.

Hand to god, she was so loud that Paul couldn't hear me talk and my ears were ringing.

SHE WAS SHOUTING ACROSS THE TABLE AT HER FRIEND.

Also, she gave us the stare of death as we were seated. I wanted to tell her that we weren't thrilled to be seated next to her either, but I bit my tongue.

Obviously we ordered champagne first. Bubbledogs has an extensive list of champagne and sparkling wines in a huge range of prices. We splashed out on some of the good stuff since it was our early Valentine's Day date.

Then we ordered our hot dogs. They have a bunch of options, allllllll of which sound delicious. I went in thinking I was going to go for a "corny dog" (aka corn dog) but when I saw one go by it was HUGE and looked pretty greasy.

I decided to go with my second choice: The Sloppy Joe dog. (aka Chili Cheese Dog). PB went all patriotic and got the 4th of July dog. It was a pork hot dog wrapped in bacon with onions, bbq sauce and coleslaw. We also ordered a side of tater tots to share.
(This is the ONLY place I've been able to get tater tots in London and they were AMAZING)

We both absolutely LOVED our hot dogs. They came on soft, buttery brioche rolls that were such an improvement over standard hot dog buns. Also, I loved the fact that the hot dogs were relatively thin. To me there is nothing worse than a bad bun/dog ratio. This was perfect.

PB loved his, and I loved mine. We don't know who ordered better, but I must say. The coleslaw on his was delicious. Next time I plan to ask to add on some 'slaw to my sloppy joe dog!

They also offer up some sweet potato fries, which we wanted to try but just refused to fit in our collective belly.

To me, Bubbledogs is pure perfection.

The high/low mix of the champagne and hot dogs really works. It's comforting but fun and the atmosphere is great.
(Despite the shouty New Yorker.)

If you live in England (or are planning a trip over to visit) you should definitely make the trek up to Charlotte Street. Be prepared for a wait, but trust me. It is SO worth it.

(Closest tube stops are Tottenham Court Road & Goodge Street)

Honestly.

HOT DOGS + CHAMPAGNE?!

GENIUS.

  7. I didn't know there's such a place in London. Thank you so much for sharing. I'm going to pop this on my London restaurant list. I haven't been to Portabello market in decades. I took one look at the crowd recently and dashed off to Westbourne Grove.
